Doctor Watson joined the Army after medical school, and he is said to have re-joined the Army late in his career. Why do you believe Watson chose to join the military as a physician? What objective (textual) and subjective (speculative) reasons exist?

Dr. John H. Watson joined the military as a physician because he is a man of noble heart who wanted to do what he could to ease the suffering of his fellow men in the worst possible circumstances. Without Watson, the stories of Holmes would be cold treatises on logic. Watson is the heart and soul of it all, and the choice to go into the military as a doctor is evidence of how deep his care and sympathy run. He’s the quiet hero of the stories.
