The Society is an inclusive group; we desire interested Watsonians to take part and to approach the Society with innovative projects. Whether you are a first time author is not important; that you try is what counts.

Submissions should be up-to-date Word documents and sent via email attachment to: publisher@johnhwatsonsociety.com.

Corrections to the Watsonian

Greetings, all! I come with editor hat in hand: I must to admit to two eratta that need to be applied to the fall Watsonian.

  • Page 44, in Brad Keefauver’s Of All Ghosts: “Your patience [has] been most useful.”
  • Page 81, in Ruth Borgar’s The War Service of Dr John H. Watson: paragraph 3 should indicate that Watson was born around 1852, rather than 1862.

Any other corrections noticed by eagle-eyed readers can be directed to publisher@johnhwatsonsociety.com. Thank you!

Watsonians in the Post

The Fall 2017 issue of The Watsonian has been arriving across the US this week, and is expected to begin landing on the other side of the pond soon. If you do not receive your copy, please do let Selena Buttons know!

Email notifications were sent out last night for the digital edition. The notifications look just like the original email you received when joining the Society, but they now include the link to download the newest issue.

We have a great mix of scholarship, observations, and fiction in this issue, as well as beautiful artwork and a particularly cryptic puzzle from our own Pawky Puzzler, Margie Deck (JHWS “Mopsy”). You’ll find some familiar names and some first-time contributors, hailing from locations all over the globe. We sincerely hope that you will find something that makes you think and something that makes you smile within those pages. Let us know what you think!

Guidelines are loose and mostly at the editor’s discretion. The journal is open-minded and receptive to thoughtful as well as amusing articles. It is the intent of the Society to provide a journal for first-time as well as experienced writers who seek to expand The Game and have fun doing so.

Submissions should be an up-to-date Word file, Pages file, or Google Doc and sent via email to: publisher@johnhwatsonsociety.com. Questions about submissions or guidelines can be directed to same.

As your newly appointed Editor-in-Chief, I am excited and honored to be reading your submissions, and want very much to help you develop your thoughts/meta/ideas into a workable essay or other form. Get in touch and let’s see what we can do for each other.

Best wishes,

Spring 2017 Watsonian

The latest issue of the Watsonian is making its way to members’ mailboxes around the world. Digital subscribers should have received a “completed order” email including a link to download the new issue. (If you have the Paperless Membership or the Print + PDF Membership and you did not receive an email, please contact Selena Buttons.)

This issue’s contributors reflect our commitment to blending the wisdom and background of great Sherlockians and the enthusiasm of those newly drawn to The Game. Some have been writing for the Watsonian since its inception, while others are appearing for the first time.

An eclectic mix of features and topics fill this issue.  Sandy Kozinn (“Roxie”) examines campfire cookery in “Roxie’s Canonical Ramblings”, Alexian Gregory (“Darwin”) explores the alleged connections between Cornish and Chaldean in “Pondicherry Ponderings”, and Lyn Adams makes an expedition to Baker Street West. The issue includes artwork from Neha Dinesh, John Foster (“Barney”), and Fran Wing (“Phoebe”). The “Billiards With…” interview series returns with a look at the Sub-librarians Scion.  Margie Deck (“Mopsy”), AKA The Pawky Puzzler, presents a cryptic challenge to solve. Essays both scholarly and personal, poetry, and pastiche can all be found with this issue’s pages.

We hope you will find something interesting, educational, entertaining, and thought-provoking in this issue. Digital (PDF) copies and details about the contents are available in the Shop: Watsonian vol. 5 no. 1.

Fall 2016 Watsonian

watsonian-cover-squareThe latest issue of the Watsonian is making its way to members’ mailboxes around the world. Digital subscribers should have received an email including a link to download the new issue. (If you have the Paperless Membership or the Print + PDF Membership and you did not receive an email, please contact Selena Buttons.) We’re very proud of this issue, and you’ll find it’s chock-full of good stuff.

In addition to returning features “Roxie’s Canonical Ramblings”, “Pondicherry Ponderings”, and “The Pawky Puzzler”, we’re thrilled to introduce “Thoughts from under Willow’s Tree”. We hope you will enjoy the beautiful color illustrations from Kayla Kinoo and Phil Cornell and the new title page illustration from Basil Chap. There are thoughtful essays on Dr Joan Watson of Elementary and the young man who might not have been John Watson in Young Sherlock Holmes. There are explorations of Victorian-era camping and phrenology, as well as a report from the “Bringing Traditional Sherlockians into Today’s Fandom” panel at the most recent 221B Con. In addition to traditional articles, this issue includes poetry, Canonical toasts, and an illustrated essay.

This issue’s contributors reflect our commitment to blending the wisdom and background of great Sherlockians and the enthusiasm of those newly drawn to The Game. Some have been writing for the Watsonian since its inception, while others are appearing for the first time. It is bittersweet that this issue includes an essay from the late Peter H Jacoby, whose previous papers on Dr Watson’s medical and military training appeared in earlier issues.

We hope you will find something interesting, educational, entertaining, and thought-provoking in this issue. Digital (PDF) copies of the issue are available in the Shop: Watsonian vol. 4 no. 2.

Watching the Mailbox

The Spring 2016 publications have been printed and are being bound as I write this, and are due to mail next week. We intended to have these out in April, and we apologize for the delay. We believe it’s worth the wait, but we will strive to have the October publications ship on schedule!

I’ll be watching my mailbox eagerly for my print copies, but those who ordered electronic editions don’t have to wait any longer. The digital versions of the Spring 2016 Watsonian, The Adventure of the Doctor and the Duellist, and Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Blank Page are now available in the Shop. If you pre-ordered, you may now download your PDF document, and new purchases are available for instant download. If you experience any technical issues, please let me know!

Start the Presses!

The Spring 2016 issue of The Watsonian and the newest edition of the Fiction Series, “The Adventure of the Doctor and the Duellist” (written by Elinor Gray, JHWS “Misty” and illustrated by Basil Chap, JHWS “Bee”), are headed to press. The print run for each is limited, so if you would like a copy of either or both for your shelves, the time to order is now!

The Watsonian - Spring 2016 "The Adventure of the Doctor and the Duellist" by Elinor Gray and Basil Chap

Members of the John H Watson Society as of Sunday, 3 April, will receive a copy of each as part of the membership dues, so there is no need to place a separate order (unless you would like a second copy, of course). If you are not currently a member, now is an excellent time to join!

Non-members wishing to order print editions must do so by Sunday, 3 April to ensure availability. After that date, electronic (PDF) copies will still be available for purchase, but there may not be extra print copies.

The newest volume of the Monograph Series, “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Blank Page”, by Leah Guinn, JHWS “Amber”, is also headed to press. This book is not included with Society membership, and the print run will be limited, so anyone wishing to order a print copy must do so by Sunday, 3 April. As with the other titles, the electronic (PDF) version will remain available for purchase after that date.

A visit to the Shop!

Today, I renewed my membership to the John H Watson Society. It’s amazing how much has happened in the past two years and I’m looking forward to the next two. 🙂

If you happen to visit the JHWS Shop to browse through our wares or to renew your membership, there are some new additions I would like to bring to your attention.

Our recent Fall 2015 publications, the Vol 3, No. 2 of The Watsonian and The Limehouse Lucifer by Laura “Blythe” Tomkins, are available for purchase if you would like to own an additional copy.

Also, we have an upcoming Monograph!

Sherlock Holmes and the Challenge of the Blank Page by Leah Guinn will be printed and distributed this coming April 2016. If you purchase this volume before April, then we will relay the information to our printer and have the book sent to you as soon as the book is printed and ready to distribute. The digital edition will also be available to download in April.

The upcoming Spring 2016 publications of The Watsonian and Fiction Series are also available for early purchase, but if you are a member, then you do not need to make an early purchase. You will receive the printed versions of these books automatically .

If you have any questions, please contact me. I’m always happy to respond to any correspondence!

Fall 2015 Publications

Fall BooksI am very happy and relieved to announce that your Fall volumes of The Watsonian and The Fiction Series are traveling to your mailbox as we speak.

I sincerely apologize for the delay. I will speak with our printer/distributor to find how best to move the books out faster. If you do not receive your copy of the above volumes in two weeks, then please contact me so that I may help sort out the matter for you.

I hope you will enjoy them!

JHWS Shop

I’m happy to announce that we now have a Shop available for anyone to purchase new membership, renewals, publications, and other items from the John H Watson Society. Simply click the “Shop” text on the upper right of the web page and feel free to browse through for anything you wish to purchase.

I wish to thank Selena for all of her hard work in putting this new feature on the website together.

For those of you who make a purchase on Paypal, please do not be alarmed by the Merchant account being under Don Libey’s name. The account is now handled by his partner and our treasurer, Asta, so we are safely handling your orders. The reason it is still in his name is simply because it is very difficult to have that information changed. If you have any further questions or suggestions about the new Shop site, please direct them to both me and Beth Gallego (JHWS Selena). We will help in any way possible.

I hope you will enjoy the new Shop! This is a wonderful time to renew membership (if it is time for you to renew) or to simply pick up previous publications that you don’t have in your library yet.
