Dr Watson mentions throughout the Canon numerous of the clergy. Remembering how well you did with Dr, Mr, MD, and their resultant lists, what is the census of the wearers of the tippit and the tunicle? Who are they and how are they identified?

I confess that the first ecclesiastic (and, at the moment, the only; it’s been a long month!) to pop into my mind was that “venerable Italian priest” from FINA. But I daresay that’s one that doesn’t even quite count! (It is one of my very favorite Holmesian disguises, however.)
I’m still looking for doctors in the Canon and I hesitate to add another manhunt (sad the word is gender appropriate) to my workload. I was hoping that other Watsonians would chime in but let me start with some easy ones:
The fake Rev. Dr. Shlessinger, missionary from South America, alias of Henry ‘Holy’ Peters LADY
The “late Elias Whitney, D.D., Principal of the Theological College of St George’s” TWIS
“James Desmond is an elderly clergyman in Westmorland.” HOUN
There is the “clergyman” at St George’s, Hanover Square who performed the Doran/St. Simon wedding as well as the clergyman in the “‘Frisco” Doran/Moulton wedding NOBL
A surpliced clergyman at “the church of St Monica in the Edgware Road” as well as Holmes’ disguise “in the character of an amiable and simple-minded Nonconformist clergyman.” SCAN
Holmes was also “a venerable Italian priest” awaiting Watson at Victoria Station FINA
“Williamson, the ex-clergyman” SOLI
“The vicar of the parish [in Cornwall], Mr. Roundhay, was something of an archaeologist, and as such Holmes had made his acquaintance.” DEVI
A “big, solemn, rather pompous clergyman” “J.C. Elman, M.A., Living of Mossmoor cum Little Purlington.” RETI
There is also the Vicar of Rome: “…I was exceedingly preoccupied by that little affair of the Vatican cameos, and in my anxiety to oblige the Pope I lost touch with several interesting English cases.” HOUN; “…his famous investigation of the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca – an inquiry which was carried out by him at the express desire of His Holiness the Pope” BLAC
Parker, the vicar of Hilton Cubitt’s parish was staying at the same boarding-house in Russell Square, London during the Jubilee DANC
Captain Peter Carey “was summoned once for a savage assault upon the old vicar” BLAC
And, no, I did not forget about “case of the two Coptic Patriarchs” RETI or the “Hebrew Rabbi” in Holmes’ index SCAN.
“Here is a book,” I said, taking up the little volume, “which first brought light into what might have been for ever dark. It is `Out of Doors,’ by the famous observer J.G. Wood.” (LION) According to the all-knowing Wikipedia on the Rev. Wood: “In 1852 he became curate of the parish of St Thomas the Martyr, Oxford, and in 1854 was ordained priest; he also took up the post of chaplain to the Boatmen’s Floating Chapel at Oxford. Among other benefices which he held was for a time chaplain to St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. In 1878 Wood settled in Upper Norwood, where he lived until his death.”
Elder, according to Wikipedia, is a priesthood office in the Mormon church. “Stangerson, Kemball, Johnston, and Drebber, who were the four principal Elders” John and Lucy Ferrier had to contend with in Utah. STUD Of course, Brigham Young was President of the LDS Church from 1847 to 1877 STUD
