Perhaps saving Holmes and his life in DEVI. But I have a feeling the modest doctor left out or minimized his finest moments for the sake of highlighting Holmes’ achievements. “For years I had gradually weaned him from that drug mania which had threatened once to check his remarkable career.” [MISS] What a throwaway line–he might as well as written “For years I tied my shoe laces.” Not an easy task, weening someone of a “drug Mania”, especially as Watson would have to assume a dominate role as physician over Holmes. “His great powers, his masterly manner, and the experience which I had had of his many extraordinary qualities, all made me diffident and backward in crossing him,” says Watson in SIGN. I’m willing to bet Watson’s greatest moments are locked somewhere in that battered tin dispatch box.
That’s a fantastic answer. Thank you! ^_^
I also enjoyed the moment he saved them both in DEVI.
