By habit, if by nothing else, I think both were Monarchists. Holmes chose “VR” to mark the wall when practice shooting, and he seemed delighted to accept the emerald tie pin from Her Majesty. True, he would not accept other honors, but they might have interfered with his profession in some way. Watson, of course, being the perfect example of a British man, would never have questioned his own love for the Queen.
