  1. Dr. John H. Watson joined the military as a physician because he is a man of noble heart who wanted to do what he could to ease the suffering of his fellow men in the worst possible circumstances. Without Watson, the stories of Holmes would be cold treatises on logic. Watson is the heart and soul of it all, and the choice to go into the military as a doctor is evidence of how deep his care and sympathy run. He’s the quiet hero of the stories.
